Mission Accepted: Elevate Your Mindset for Success

As a facility administrator in California, your role is demanding. You balance the needs of your team, the demands of your facility, and the ever-changing landscape of policies, regulations and expectations. But amidst all this responsibility, there’s one thing that often gets overlooked—you.

Everything in your life, both professionally and personally, starts with you. Before every action, there’s a thought. And if you don’t like your current situation, it’s time to look in the mirror and upgrade your thinking.

Your thoughts are the foundation of everything you do.

In your role, every decision, every interaction with staff, residents, and families, starts with a thought. Positive thoughts can uplift you, help you move forward, and motivate you to take action. Negative thoughts, however, can have the opposite effect—they can hold you back, discourage you, and prevent progress.

If you're content with the status quo, there's no need to change anything. But if you're craving a better work environment, a more efficient team, or healthier relationships with your residents and staff, it's time to consider shifting your mindset.

As Dr. Norman Vincent Peale explains in The Power of Positive Thinking, “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”

This holds especially true in the world of adult and elderly care. The challenges you face daily, from maintaining the quality of care to managing high staff turnover, can feel overwhelming at times. But the more you shift your focus from obstacles to opportunities, the more you’ll witness your team and facility thrive.

You are the leader…the difference maker.

Your mindset shapes the atmosphere of your entire facility. When you upgrade your thinking, you open the door to growth for yourself and your team. If you approach your work with a mindset focused on solutions rather than obstacles, you inspire your staff to do the same.

For example, let’s say your team is facing a new regulation that seems overwhelming. Instead of focusing on how difficult it is to implement, shift the thinking to how this new regulation could improve the care you provide to residents. By focusing on the positive impact, you can encourage your team to embrace the change and find ways to make it work smoothly.

When you raise your thinking, you raise the thinking of your staff too. They’ll begin to adopt the same mindset. A positive shift in thinking leads to a more engaged, proactive, and supportive team. And when your team is on the same page, they are more efficient, more effective, and ultimately provide better care to the residents.

How to Create a Contagious Mindset

Your team’s mindset can directly impact how well your facility functions. When your staff embraces the right attitude, they become more open to learning, trying new processes, and adapting to the fast-paced and ever-changing world of healthcare. You, as the administrator, have the opportunity to foster this positive shift in thinking. Here are a few ways to do so:

  1. Model Positive Thinking: Lead by example. If you face a challenge or setback, show your team how you approach it with a solution-oriented mindset. Let them see you focus on what can be done, rather than what can’t.  As the leader, what you do has a trickle down effect.  If you emulate the willingness to work as a team and include your staff in the implementation of key processes, you’ll find they’ll have your back.

2.Provide Learning Opportunities: This is not often done in our industry, but I believe is the key to not only supporting, but growing your team.  Give your staff access to training, uplifting books, and engaging audios that encourage personal development. Create an environment where learning and growth are always encouraged.

3. Acknowledge Positive Contributions: When staff members approach situations with a positive mindset, make sure to acknowledge it. Recognize the effort they’re putting into thinking critically and embracing challenges. This kind of recognition can go a long way in motivating them to continue with that mindset.

4. Encourage Communication and Support: Create a space where your team feels supported, not just in terms of their work but in their personal growth as well. Open communication and shared experiences can help uplift the collective mindset.

By creating a team with the right mindset, you foster a culture where your staff feels empowered to perform at their best. This directly translates to improved patient care and a more positive working environment.

Take Action: Upgrade Your Thinking Today

If you're ready for a change, the first step is simple: upgrade your thinking. Start by being mindful of the thoughts you entertain each day. When negative or limiting thoughts arise, challenge them. Replace them with thoughts that focus on possibilities, solutions, and growth.

Remember the wisdom from The Power of Positive Thinking: "A man is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes." The way you think today shapes your future tomorrow—both personally and professionally.

By uplifting your own mindset, you have the power to uplift your entire team, which will lead to better care, a healthier work environment, and a more successful facility. The change you want for your facility begins with you.
