As an administrator, you are the glue within your facility. You are both the eyes and ears of all staff members, residents, and their families. Not only that, but you are also the overseer who ensures that every aspect of your organization runs smoothly. Sounds easy, right?

While average leaders let insufficient resources, external pressures, deadlines, and finances weigh them down or prevent them from "getting the job done," difference-makers do whatever it takes to meet all needs and goals even when it takes additional time, energy, and effort.

Great leaders don't set out to be a leader. They set out to make a difference. It is never about the role, but always about the goal.- Lisa Haisha

I'm sure you've encountered situations and circumstances in which you felt as if you were hitting your head against the wall.
In our field, we are results—and data-driven. We have to be so processes run smoothly, patients' needs are met, and reporting is accurate. We often find ourselves consistently doing all the "right" things, yet it often feels like we are spinning in circles and not seeing notable results.
Do not give up. I'm here to tell you that every positive action, conversation, book, and decision you make makes a difference and will lead you to positive results.

Let me share a story with you to spark a little inspiration.

A stonecutter had once been chipping away at a massive boulder. He struck the stone repeatedly with great determination, with no such luck in splitting it. After hundreds of strikes with no visible sign of success, he hit the stone one last time before quitting. To his surprise, the boulder split in half.
It was not the final blow that broke the stone in half, but all the hard work and effort that had happened before.

Persistence is a virtue that truly pays off. Often, our progress is invisible (especially as facility administrators), and it may seem as if our hard work, efforts, and struggles are not making a difference. In reality, each aligned step or action you take brings you closer to your goal.
Success is often the result of consistent, dedicated effort over time, even when one does not see instantaneous results.

One call away from building trust and rapport with a particular resident's family?
One conversation away from finding out the real reason why your staff member is struggling?
One "hello" away from brightening your loneliest resident's day?
One course away from staying compliant with the state?
One session away with your mentor or coach to help you implement new programs or regulations successfully?
That's right! You never know when you are one step away from a breakthrough or completing something that once felt impossible.
It can become extremely overwhelming to look at your to-do list or responsibilities in their entirety. Instead, focus on one piece of the puzzle or task at a time until you have successfully completed it.
How do you eat an elephant?
One task, call, course, or conversation can all add up and lead to your desired results and goals. Maybe that's accepting more resident intakes, fewer reporting errors, improving systems, time management, or enhanced lines of communication. Regardless of your goals, everything impacts your staff and residents. The truth is they are counting on you to make those improvements because it makes your facility a happier place to work and live.

In light of the recent Olympics, we can thank many talented athletes for modeling how hard work and persistence pay off. Dozens of Olympians have been one race, competition, or trial away from giving up or walking away. Yet, they made the decision to keep going. Not only did they give it one more shot, but they gave their goal or dream their all. In return, many of them advanced to the Olympics. For example, can you imagine if Simone Biles, America's most decorated gymnast, walked away from her sport four years ago after getting injured in Rio? She would have missed out on the Paris Olympics, where she won 4 additional medals.

When you are exhausted, just try one more time.
So, when the days as a facility administrator get tough, remember your actions and hard work are paying off in the long run. They will lead you in the right direction when they are strategic, intentional, and aligned with your facility's goals.
Just like the stonecutter who did not see progress until his final strike, keep going, and one day, you too will have a breakthrough.
You've got this! What if you stopped too soon?
