Tis' the season for “good tidings and cheer,” yet so often, rather than feeling full of joy, the season brings about extra stress. And while the holiday season can be a hectic time for anyone, when you are leading a team at work, the pressure can be even greater. It’s important to find strategies that help you manage your time and energy and reduce stress so you can continue to lead your team and support your residents effectively.

Below are some quick tips to consider:
Prioritize and Plan Ahead
1. Set Clear Objectives: Begin by defining what needs to be accomplished during the holiday season. Establish clear, achievable goals for both yourself and your team. This provides your team direction and helps everyone understand their priorities. Putting this down in writing and committing to clear communication is also key.
2. Create a Detailed Schedule: Use a calendar to plan your tasks and deadlines. Allocate time for each activity (especially those additional festivities you may be hosting this time of year) and avoid overloading your schedule as much as possible.
Remember to include buffer time for unexpected situations and circumstances. Communicating both your objectives and schedule clearly and in a timely manner enables everyone to be on the same page, thus eliminating any additional stress and tension. Because we all know, nobody has time or energy for that.
3 Delegate Responsibilities: Trust your team by delegating tasks according to each member's strengths and abilities. This not only reduces your workload but also empowers your team and fosters a collaborative environment. Especially when it comes to additional holiday activities, it shouldn’t fall on one person’s shoulders.
Practice Mindful Leadership
1. Communicate Effectively: As mentioned earlier, maintain open lines of communication with your team. Go out of your way to acknowledge that you understand a lot is going on, but make it clear you welcome additional questions and conversations to ensure the day-to-day tasks and activities run smoothly. On top of that, be sure to follow up on regular check-ins to address any concerns promptly and ensure your team members are all on the same page and teed up for success.
2. Encourage Breaks and Flexibility: Recognize that everyone is juggling personal and professional responsibilities during the holidays. Allow for flexible work arrangements (if possible) and encourage your team to take regular breaks to recharge. This could be stopping by a common area for a special glass of cider or picking up a peppermint just to boost morale.
3. Lead by Example: Demonstrate a balanced approach by managing your own stress and time effectively. Communicate what works for you and what doesn’t. Show your team that it’s possible to remain calm and organized even amidst the holiday rush.
Support and Motivate Your Team
1. Celebrate Achievements: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your team's accomplishments, both big and small that have taking place throughout the month or even over the year as a whole. This boosts morale and keeps spirits high during the busy season.
2. Provide Resources: Ensure your team has access to the necessary resources and tools to complete their tasks efficiently. While this is important to consider all year long, sometimes the small “situations” seem bigger during an already hectic time. Eliminating frustration and stumbling blocks increases productivity.
3. Foster a Positive Environment: Encourage a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and appreciated. This can significantly reduce stress levels and enhance teamwork. Take time to celebrate and thank your team. Without them, you could not do what you do, and they’re on the front line to ensure your resident’s care is top-notch.
Remember it’s important to take care of yourself so you can support others.
1. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal time. This helps you maintain a healthy work-life balance and prevent burnout. While often easier said than done, it truly is key so you can be there to show up for yourself and your family.
2. Practice Self-Care: Schedule activities that help you relax and recharge, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones or your beloved pets.
3. Find Gratitude: As the year ends, take a moment to be grateful for the big and small wins in your life, both personally and professionally. The more you focus on gratitude, the more positive you will find around you.
Remember the days you’re not the only one impacted by the additional stress surrounding the holidays. Take care of yourself first to help your team navigate these unique times. Be intentional about finding gratitude throughout the day, and help set up your team for success by making some intentional shifts to ensure everyone is on the same page.
